About the Unit
The Stroke Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was established in February 2010 with the provision of a dedicated ward of 24 beds. At present, there are facilities for immediate diagnosis of acute stroke using the computerized tomographic scanners in the Emergency Department and Radiology Unit of the hospital. There are also facilities for sub-acute management of stroke on the ward floor and neuro-rehabilitation unit within the ward for patients. The bed spaces include 5 private rooms for patients who require rehabilitation and for those patients who prefer privacy during hospital stay provided they are not acutely ill. The unit is being supervised by Dr. A. O. Ogunrin a consultant neurologist, together with two other competent neurologists.

The unit offers qualitative nursing care rendered by qualified nurses who have received basic training in stroke care.

The unit offers follow-up care twice in a week (Wednesday afternoon clinic and Friday morning clinic) in the Consultant out-patient department of the hospital. The clinic attendance is by appointment through the Medical Records unit.
The in-patient care includes regular ward rounds on a daily basis – comprising consultants’ ward rounds, resident ward rounds and once a month grand round. The nursing care is 24 hours a day with a sleep-in arrangement for a call doctor.

Supportive care for acute stroke patients is available in the Emergency department on presentation.
Emergency acute thrombolytic Stroke treatment
This is yet to commence. Details shall be provided as soon as facilities are on ground.
