In healthcare service delivery, uninterrupted power supply is an indispensable lifeline; vital medical equipment and Information Technology (IT) systems, on which patient care relies, are intrinsically tied to the availability of electrical power.
As part of the visionary UBTH strategic plan for infrastructure enhancement, the UBTH Management in May 2022, forged a strategic partnership with the Ossiomo Power Plant, setting the stage for the introduction of an alternative power source for the hospital.
Simultaneously, the aged and ailing 50-year-old power distribution panel within the hospital received a much-needed replacement with a modern 11KV panel. This new panel serves as a nexus, seamlessly integrating power supplies from both the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and Ossiomo.

The completion of this ambitious project in June 2023, marked a monumental turning point for UBTH. It ushered our hospital into an era of more robust and reliable power supply. This has not only reduced our reliance on diesel generators but also significantly curtailed the overall expenditure associated with purchasing diesel and maintaining backup generators.

As a testament to the project’s success, in August 2023, meticulous technical analysis of power supply within the main hospital revealed that of the 31 days (744 hours) in August, a total of 29 days, 15 hours, and 17 minutes (equivalent to 711 hours and 17 minutes) of power supply were derived from the combined efforts of Ossiomo and BEDC. This means that total power outage for August and thus diesel consumption was only for 1 day, 8 hours, and 43 minutes (equivalent to 32 hours and 43 minutes)
