ADVANCING EMERGENCY MEDICINE SERVICES IN EDO STATE

The much anticipated International workshop on Prioritizing Emergency Medical Services in Integrated Health Care in Edo State held today 17th June, 2022 at the John Odigie Oyegun Training Institute, Benin City.

The workshop which was a collaboration between the Edo State Government, University of Benin Teaching Hospital and the Ghana National Ambulance Service saw presentations from seasoned Emergency Physicians such as Dr. Maxwell Osei-Ampofo, Deputy CEO Ghana National Ambulance Service and Dr. Alex Sloboda from Columbia University Irving Medical Centre, United States of America. Other speakers were Prof. P. Iribhogbe, Consultant Surgeon and Head, Department of Surgery, UBTH and Dr Scott Omorogbe, Consultant Surgeon, UBTH.

The workshop brought to fore the dire need for an integrated emergency medical service in Edo State. This was highlighted by the CMD of UBTH, Prof.D.E. Obaseki who appreciated the Governor of Edo State, H.E. Godwin Obaseki for his prompt approval of this workshop. This according to him is an indication of the quality of leadership the Governor is made.
The Hon.Commissioner of Health Prof. Obehi Akoria appreciated the Management of UBTH and the resource persons for the workshop. She hinted that Government would surely do something in the direction of emergency medical services in Edo State.

The Executive Governor of Edo State was represented at the workshop which also had the presence of other Commissioners, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Health and other government functionaries.

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital was taken over by the Federal Government on April 1st, 1975 as the fifth teaching hospital coming after Ibadan Teaching Hospital and Lagos Teaching Hospital.
