The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) recently held an orientation exercise for its newly employed staff, marking the beginning of their professional journey in one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary health institutions.
The programme, which took place in a warm and orderly atmosphere at Nurses House, was designed to acquaint the new staff with the hospital’s vision, mission, core values, and operational standards.
Participants were taken through key aspects of hospital administration, ethics, patient-centered care, workplace safety, and inter-departmental collaboration, all aimed at equipping them for effective service delivery.
While addressing the new employees, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, warmly welcomed them into the UBTH family and congratulated them on their successful employment. She charged the staff to uphold the highest standards of discipline, punctuality, and dedication to duty, noting that these virtues are fundamental to the hospital’s culture and reputation.
The CMD emphasized that UBTH is a service-driven institution where professionalism, teamwork, and compassion must guide every action. She reminded the staff that patients and their families entrust their lives to the hospital daily, and as such, every employee must see their role—clinical or non-clinical—as critical to saving lives and promoting public confidence in the health system.
She further encouraged the new staff to be committed to continuous learning, respect constituted authority, and adhere strictly to the rules and regulations of the hospital and the public service. According to her, discipline and punctuality are not optional, but essential attributes that reflect dedication and integrity in service.
The orientation exercise also featured interactive sessions with resource persons drawn from top Management Staff including the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Emmanuel Osaigbovo and Acting Director of Administration, Mrs J.J. Oyakhilome, amongst others.
The Resource persons provided practical insights into workplace expectations, communication channels, and ethical conduct. The exercise concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among the participants, as they expressed gratitude to the hospital management for the opportunity and pledged their commitment to serving humanity with diligence and professionalism.
The UBTH orientation exercise thus set a strong foundation for the newly employed staff, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery and human capital development.
