Postgraduate training in the Department of Community Health started in 1977, prior to this period; residents were sponsored by the hospital for training overseas, after a stipulated rotational training within the department. The trainees were expected to report back to the hospital and department immediately on expiration of the study leave abroad, and were required to serve the hospital for a stipulated time. Presently the department has the capability to train residents without having to go abroad for the training.

OBJECTIVE AND GOALS OF THE DEPARTMENT
1 To train medical doctors wishing to specialize in Community Health to the status of Fellows such that they can practice professionally and academically with the highest level of technical skills and at the highest cadre of the specialty.
2 To carry out epidemiological studies and identify the prevalent health problems in the community and ways to control them.
3 To develop the spirit of team-work in promoting health in all population groups.
4 To co-ordinate the training programmes of various cadre of medical personnel in the area of public health.
5 To organize consultant clinics on endemic diseases in the Teaching Hospitals.
6 To liaise with outside agencies on all matters related to the basic concept of community health.

RESIDENCY TRAINING FORMAT
Resident doctors undergo rotational postings through the various sub-specialties as suitably identified in the relevant units of the department and the institution.
The postings run side with lectures, seminar, workshops, tutorials, institutional field work, laboratory practical and clinical postings.
Units under the department giving resident doctors exposure to different sub-specialties of public health include:
1. Consultant Clinic- This is situated in the General Practice Clinic of the hospital, where the following service are rendered:
a. Endemic disease clinic including communicable disease, sexually transmitted infections, etc.
b. Occupational health clinic- medical examination service. etc.
c. Immunization
d. Non-communicable disease prevention clinic- hypertension clinic etc.
2. Screening clinic. – This is a well person’s clinic situated in the centre for disease control (CDC). Clients come to be screened for a variety of chronic non communicable medical conditions. Presently, the disease and conditions screened for include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hepatitis B and C serum lipids breast cancer, prostrate cancer. These are plans to expand this list to include several other non- communicable diseases in the future.
3. Infection Control Unit – This is solely responsible for the control of infections in the hospital. Residents go on ward rounds with Consultants and the infection control nurses in the department to ensure that all comply with standard precautions on the control of infections.
4. Comprehensive Health centre, Ogbona – This is a primary health care facility coordinated by the department. Residents acquired managerial skills while attached to the facility as they involved in the administration of the facility.
Services in the centre include:
– Outpatient consultants
– Antenatal clinic
– Delivery service
– Post- natal care
– Family planning
– Immunization
– Growth monitoring
– In-patient care
– Coordinating the village Health Committee, Ogbona.
5. Environmental Health Unit – This Unit of the department is charged with maintaining adequate environment health in the hospital. Services include:
– Collection and disposal of refuse
– Maintaining adequate food hygiene
– Vector and pest control
6. Centre for Training Community Health Officers – The Department coordinate this centre and residents participate in the teaching/ training of the health workers.
7. Departmental Museum/Public Health Laboratory- The Museum stores specimen used for both undergraduate and postgraduate training and examination while the Public health laboratory is used for analysis of samples obtain during community health surveys and also for the analysis of samples from clients in the screening clinic.
8. MPH Programme – Through this programme the residents also receive formal lectures.
