On Tuesday, 19th August 2025, the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UBTH, Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu held an interactive session with the Chairmen/President and executive members of all Unions and Associations within the hospital.
The meeting, which marks her first major official engagement since assumption of duty, was aimed at fostering dialogue, building trust, and setting the tone for a collaborative working relationship between management and staff bodies.
In her remarks, Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized that her administration would run an open-door policy, stressing that she is accessible to all staff through calls, text messages, and in-person visits to her office. According to her, this approach is designed to promote transparency, inclusiveness, and effective communication across all cadres of the hospital community.
The CMD further reiterated her strong commitment to staff welfare, noting that the well-being of workers is central to her vision for UBTH. She announced plans to establish a staff welfare centre, which will include:
* A staff clinic to address health needs of employees;
* A creche to cater for children of staff, and
* A staff lounge to serve as a relaxation hub, thereby enhancing work-life balance.
In demonstrating her desire to listen to all stakeholders, Prof. Ize-Iyamu took time to meet with each of the unions and associations independently giving their leaders the opportunity to present issues and suggestions peculiar to their groups.
This gesture reflects her inclusiveness and commitment to carrying every staff body along.
Responding to the various issues raised, the CMD assured union leaders that their concerns would be duly addressed. She also emphasized that cases of misconduct or infractions would be handled decisively to ensure fairness, discipline, and accountability.
While appreciating the Unions and Associations for maintaining peace and harmony during the tenure of the immediate past CMD, Prof. Ize-Iyamu extended a hand of fellowship, urging them to sustain the spirit of cooperation.
The meeting was attended by executives of the following bodies:
* Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN)
* National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM)
* Association of Resident Doctors (ARD)
* Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN)
* Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN)
* Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP)
