UBTH Commemorates World Hand Hygiene Day 2025. Theme “

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital joined the global health community to mark the 2025 World Hand Hygiene Day with a series of impactful activities aimed at reinforcing best practices in infection prevention and control. The day began with a Hand Hygiene Road Walk and Awareness Campaign led by the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Committee, chaired by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC), Research and Ethics, Dr Esohe Ogboghodo. Staff and students engaged patients, visitors, and healthcare workers across the hospital, raising awareness on the critical role of hand hygiene and the misconception that gloves can replace clean hands. This was followed by a One-Day Scientific Workshop at the TETFUND Building, featuring expert-led sessions on hand hygiene compliance, appropriate glove use, and sustainable IPC practices. In his opening remarks, Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Ewaen Obaseki, emphasized that while gloves offer a level of protection, hand hygiene remains the cornerstone of infection prevention in healthcare. “ . , .” Dr. Tochi Okwor, Coordinator of the National IPC Programme and Nigeria’s Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Coordination Committee, described hand hygiene as a moral obligation and a public health imperative. “ .” Other speakers, including Mrs Edith Uwugiaren (Northamptonshire Healthcare, UK), Mrs Osagioduwa Oloru (Chief Environmental Health Officer, UBTH), and Dr Esohe Ogboghodo (DCMAC, Research and Ethics/Chair, IPC Committee), addressed the misuse of gloves and shared insights into UBTH’s ongoing efforts to reduce healthcare-associated infections through strengthened IPC strategies. UBTH remains committed to fostering a culture of safety, excellence, and accountability in healthcare—beginning with clean hands. #UBTHCares #CleanHandsSaveLives #InfectionPrevention  #GloveUse #HealthcareSafety  #QualityHealthcareSolution
