Today, the Infection Control Unit of the Department of Community Health commenced a health education exercise for all mothers whose neonates are admitted in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). This exercise will hold weekly at the SCBU.

The objective of this exercise is to improve the hand hygiene practices of mothers as the hands are a major route of transmission of infections, in health care settings. Hand hygiene is a crucial element in Infection Prevention and Control and involving all stakeholders is a necessary step in achieving this.

The Five moments of hand hygiene for mothers in SCBU adapted from the WHO 5 moments of hand hygiene was developed by the unit and taught to the mothers.

This health education exercise is following the second Orange Network Workshop on Hand Hygiene, organized by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control and partners.

In today’s inaugural health education programme, 12 mothers were health educated and practical sessions on the steps in hand washing and hand rubbing were conducted.

At the end of the programme, hand sanitizers were donated to the mothers by the Pharmacy Department of UBTH.
