Dr. Oseyi Dawodu UBTH Staff of the Month, May 2024

Dr Oseyi Dawodu, consultant cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, is honoured as UBTH Staff of the Month for May 2024 in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the hospital’s healthcare services.

Dr Dawodu has been instrumental in establishing the successful Open Heart Surgery Programme at UBTH, a landmark achievement that underscores his dedication to medical excellence and patient care.

Dr. Dawodu’s medical career commenced at the University of Ghana, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. His passion for cardiothoracic surgery was ignited at the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra, Ghana. He commenced residency training at the Department of Surgery, UBTH, where he gained extensive experience in various surgical disciplines. His advanced fellowship training included stints at the UBTH Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit, Apollo Hospital Apollo Children’s Hospital in Chennai, India, and the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra. These training programmes culminated in clinical fellowships in adult and paediatric cardiac surgery and the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons, in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dr. Dawodu began his career as a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Babcock/Tristate Cardiovascular Centre, Nigeria’s busiest cardiac centre. In 2023, he returned to UBTH as a consultant in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery. Together with a multidisciplinary team at UBTH and an external all-Nigerian expert team, successful open-heart surgeries on two children with congenital heart defects were performed.

Dr. Dawodu’s commitment to advancing cardiothoracic surgery, coupled with his dedication to exemplary patient care, has significantly enriched the medical community at UBTH. This achievement has greatly contributed to the hospital’s strategic mission.
