On Thursday, October 12, 2023, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) had the distinct honor of receiving a distinguished delegation from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), the Centre of Excellence in Reproductive Health Innovation (CERHI), and the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) UK.

The delegation consisted of the QAA team, led by Professor Mark Davies, Emeritus Professor of Bioscience at the University of Sunderland in the UK, Dr. Ngepathimo Kadhila, Director of Quality Assurance at the University of Namibia, and Mr. Alan Weale, Review Manager. Furthermore, the delegation included prominent figures such as the Provost of Medical Sciences, Prof. Sadoh; Dean of Medicine, Prof. Osarogiagbon; Former DVC, Prof. Mrs. A. Osahon, along with several Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments from UNIBEN, all of whom added distinction to this esteemed assembly.

This visit marks a pivotal milestone in UNIBEN’s journey toward international accreditation, a prerequisite stipulated by the World Bank in support of CERHI. The primary objective is to bolster UNIBEN’s global standing through accreditation from QAA, UK, a renowned agency recognized for its stringent European standards in assessing tertiary education. Notably, UNIBEN stands as the first Nigerian university to host the QAA UK team for this significant purpose.

Professor F. E. Okonofua, the Center leader of CERHI, commended the exceptional quality of service provided by UBTH, underscoring its substantial contribution to the achievements of CERHI students. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) conveyed his gratitude for the robust collaborative partnership between UNIBEN and UBTH, highlighting the shared commitment to teaching, research, and patient-centered care that unites both institutions.

During the visit, the delegation had the opportunity to explore critical areas of the hospital, including the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), Labor Ward, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). They were deeply impressed by the remarkable caliber of staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and advanced medical equipment.

We are deeply honored to be a part of UNIBEN’s pursuit of this momentous milestone, and we eagerly anticipate further collaborations on this remarkable journey.
