Theme: ACT NOW: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future
Today marks the beginning of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025, and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, UBTH joins the global call to strengthen actions that prevent and control antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
AMR remains a major threat to global health, reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics, and making previously treatable infections harder to manage.
Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, self-medication and poor infection prevention practices continue to drive resistance. Addressing this challenge requires responsible use of antimicrobials and strict adherence to evidence-based treatment.
At UBTH, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee promotes rational antimicrobial use through guidelines, surveillance, audits and continuous medical education, ensuring patients receive effective treatment without contributing to resistance.
This year’s theme, “ACT NOW: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, is a reminder that coordinated action from healthcare professionals, policymakers, pharmacists, patients and caregivers is essential to preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials for future generations.
UBTH remains committed to strengthening antimicrobial stewardship and advancing practices that protect the health of our community now and in the years ahead.
