In commemoration of the “World Breastfeeding week 2023”, the Institute of Child Health, University of Benin/ University of Benin Teaching Hospital as part of its commitment to ensuring standard healthcare and feeding amongst infants and as a means to sensitize nursing mothers and the general public on the importance of good feeding practices in infants conducted a one-day Baby Show themed “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a difference for working parents”
The event which held on Thursday, 3rd August 2023 at the Institute of Child Health Seminar room, Oba Akenzua II Complex, UBTH was conducted in order to re-train nursing mothers and all invited guests on the importance of Breastfeeding for child health.
A presentation on the theme “Enabling Breastfeeding: Making a difference for working parents”, was presented by the Director of Institute of Child Health, Prof. Ayebo Sadoh where she stated that “Breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed the human infant- exclusively for the first six months of life then continued breastfeeding up to two years and beyond while nutritionally adequate complementary food is added. She also stated that breastfeeding mothers can be supported and the major barriers of breastfeeding can be addressed by partners/husbands, employers, government and the general public providing help, getting involved, communicating and agreeing on breastfeeding goals.
A major highlight of the Baby show event was the presentation of gifts and consolation prizes to different categories of babies born from 0-6 months and 7 months and above who weighed 8.5kg to 8.7kg in different clinical visits.
In attendance at the event were ; the Chief-host, the Vice chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof Lilian Salami represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Catherine Ukpomwan, The chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, The Guest of Honor, the Head of Cardiopulmonary/Intensive Care Unit/ Dep. Director of Physiotherapy UBTH, Dr. Chigozie Obaseki, Special guest, the Provost University of Benin, Prof. Wilson Sadoh, the DCMAC, (Training and Monitoring) UBTH, Dr. Eki-Udoko Fidelis, representatives of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Eseigbe Efeomon, Mrs Phil-Imade Amenze, representatives from various departments of UNIBEN/UBTH, Nursing mothers and Children.
