The University of Benin Teaching Hospital, in collaboration with the Society for Gastroenterology and Hematology in Nigeria and pharmaceutical companies, joined the global community on Monday, 29th July 2024, to commemorate World Hepatitis Day.
Observed every July 28th, this year’s theme, “It’s Time for Action,” emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat viral hepatitis.
At UBTH, we contributed to the global awareness campaign by organizing a lecture on viral hepatitis, a TV presentation, free screening, and vaccination for individuals who tested negative.
Notably, hepatitis B and C are the most prevalent forms, which can lead to chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer if left untreated. The alarming statistics reveal that 325 million people worldwide suffer from chronic hepatitis, resulting in 123 million deaths annually – one death every 30 seconds.
Symptoms often appear when the disease has advanced, highlighting the importance of testing and preventive measures. Fortunately, birth dose vaccination has emerged as a game-changer in combating hepatitis.
The World Health Organization aims to eliminate the virus by 2030. Let us take action now.
